Yitro – Waves of Education

Musar Avicha Shul Posted on January 23, 2019 by BaruchJanuary 23, 2019

John Dewey once said, “Education is not preparation for life, it is life itself”. The Torah is not just a book of laws educating us about what to do in life; Torah is life itself. When reading and studying the gamut of Torah (Bible, Midrash, Jewish philosophy and Talmud), an axiom must be that the Torah has the depth and breadth to teach life lessons beyond what is written in black and white. We can learn so much from the way verses were written and the examples given by our Sages.

Beshalach – Appreciate the Journey

Musar Avicha Shul Posted on January 17, 2019 by BaruchJanuary 17, 2019

In this week’s Parsha, we read about the greatest miracle in history, the splitting of the sea. The Sages go into great detail in describing the impact of this miracle. As a result of this event, Am Yisrael, out of thankfulness and gratitude, sang a song of praise to Hashem, Shirat Hayam. This is the first time in the Bible that we are presented with a song. Am Yisrael unite in joy and gratitude to Hashem for his salvation and being brought out of slavery.

Va’era – Ordinary is Miraculous

Musar Avicha Shul Posted on January 1, 2019 by BaruchJanuary 1, 2019

A wise man once said, “Anyone who doesn’t believe in Miracles is not a realist”. The idea of miracles is an important theme throughout Sefer Shemot. In almost all cultures and religions, miracles are a basic tenet of religious faith and religious history. Miracles come to teach us that everything is in Hashem’s hands and he can do what he wishes with anything in our world.

Shemot – Fences are The Best protection

Musar Avicha Shul Posted on December 26, 2018 by BaruchDecember 26, 2018

One of the most disheartening parts of Judaism are the decrees and prohibition from our Rabbinic Sages. The difficulty in them is that many times these “fences” are very demanding and are meant to prevent even the slightest  chance of sin. Many modern thinkers feel these farfetched situations with which those decrees are based on seem ridiculous. These decrees encompass a great part of our lives and sometimes these additional decrees to basic commandments can be more difficult than the commandments themselves.

Vayechi – The Big Picture

Musar Avicha Shul Posted on December 19, 2018 by BaruchJanuary 6, 2019

There are many times in life when we, as Human beings, cannot understand why bad or good things happen to us. We sometimes wonder what Hashem has planned. We are at times sad, confused, or even angry because of the way things turn out. Philosophers and theologians have for centuries discussed and researched the idea of divine intervention. In Judaism as well, there are disputes amongst our greatest sages about the degree to which Hashem intervenes in our world.

Vayigash – Standing in your friend’s shoes

Musar Avicha Shul Posted on December 12, 2018 by BaruchDecember 12, 2018

How can we as human beings truly help one another? Rav Soloveichik explains that in order to achieve an act of true giving, one must understand what the receiver is missing. He must consciously feel and identify with the person he is giving to. Rav Soloveichik gives a very practical example of this. When a person wants to comfort a mourner, he must picture himself beforehand in the mourner’s situation.

Mikeitz – Judaism: A religion of Action

Musar Avicha Shul Posted on December 5, 2018 by BaruchDecember 5, 2018

Everything is foreseen, and free will is given, and with goodness the world is judged. And all is in accordance to the majority of the deed.

The depth of this message is that even though Hashem knows the future and gives humankind the benefit of the doubt as much as possible, our final judgment is based on our actions.

Vayishlach – An Unbreakable Nation

Musar Avicha Shul Posted on November 21, 2018 by BaruchNovember 21, 2018

Thomas Newton once said “The preservation of the Jews is really one of the most single and illustrious acts of divine Providence”. The fact that Jews have survived every type of persecution over the last 2000 years is beyond comprehension.
